1965-1968 Frank Robinson Signed Pro-Model Bat - Highest-Graded Example!
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,700.00
Frank Robinson H&B signature model "R161" bat dating from the 1965-1968 manufacturing period. Graded A9 by MEARS; one of only two graded at this level, with none graded higher. This is an extraordinary Frank Robinson bat! The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, black rack marks, cleat marks, and grain swelling. Robinson's uniform number ("20") is written in faded black marker on both the knob and the end of the barrel. Robinson has inscribed the bat in blue Sharpie (grading "10") on the sweet spot of the barrel, "Frank Robinson - 586 HR's." Factory records document shipments of this particular model bat, matching this bat's specifications, throughout the four-year period 1965-1968. Robinson, who was traded from Cincinnati to Baltimore following the 1965 season, wore number "20" with both clubs. However, the fact that this bat displays black rack marks (as opposed to red) indicates that it probably dates from his days as a Baltimore Oriole. Robinson's 1966 inaugural season in Baltimore was undoubtedly the finest season of his career. The legendary slugger captured the Triple Crown with league-leading totals of 49 home runs, 122 RBI, and a .316 average. He also led the League in runs (122) and slugging percentage (.637). Robinson is still the only player in history to win the MVP Award in each league and his lifetime total of 586 home runs ranks seventh on the all-time list. In 1975 he made history by becoming the first African-American to manage a Major League team when he accepted the job as player/manager of the Cleveland Indians. Robinson was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982. Length: 34.875 inches. Weight: 35.2 ounces. Graded A9 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 3 points for use and 1 point for the uniform number on the knob and barrel end). This is one of thirteen Frank Robinson pro-model bats listed in the MEARS census, with none graded higher. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
