Circa 1955 Stan Musial Signed Pro Model Bat ("Large Signature")
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,993.75
Exceedingly rare Stan Musial "large signature" pro model "M159" H&B bat, dating from the mid-to-late 1950s, signed twice by Musial. All Musial game bats are very desirable but this particular Musial bat style is especially rare and highly prized by collectors. It is one of only a few known examples with the "large" facsimile signature stamped on the barrel. Ideally, the bat bears two Musial signatures on the barrel, one of which is in the form of a vintage black marker inscription (grading "8") that reads, "Fred Jr. from your buddie Stan Musial." The second, penned directly below the barrel stamping, is a blue Sharpie inscription ("10") reading "Stan Musial - Gamer." The bat displays heavy use including ball, rack, and cleat marks, grain swelling, and deeply embedded stitch marks. An additional notation, the imprint of which appears to read "Biggies" (which was the name of Musial's restaurant in St. Louis), has been removed from the barrel. H&B factory records document numerous shipments of 34.5-inch, 30-ounce M159 model bats to Musial between the years 1953 (the first shipment was on July 14th) and 1960. Length: 34.25 inches. Weight: 30.8 ounces. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus an additional 3 points for use and 1 point for the vintage inscription, but minus a half point for the removal of the other notation). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
