1926-1930 George Sisler Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50

George Sisler Spalding "Hand Turned" model "No. 200" pro-model bat dating from the 1926 through 1930 manufacturing period. Graded A8 by MEARS, only one graded at this level, with none graded higher. Sisler's initials, "G. S.," are stamped on the barrel. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including cleat marks, grain swelling, and surface marks. A crack in the handle (of indeterminate length) has been professionally repaired. Spalding Hand Turned bats bearing just the player's initials are rare, but as MEARS notes in its accompanying LOA there are other known documented examples of this style, including bats issued to Paul Waner and Rogers Hornsby (In fact, a photograph taken during a game pictures Hornsby holding a Spalding bat of this style bearing the stamped initials "R. H."). In addition to the cited precedents, this bat also perfectly matches the known specifications of George Sisler H&B signature-model bats from the era, including style, length, and weight. Sisler was one of baseball's greatest hitters and is one of only three modern-era players to bat over .400 in a season two or more times. Despite his advancing age, Sisler was still a formidable presence at the plate between the years 1926 and 1930 (the year of his retirement), compiling season averages of .290, .327, .331, .326, and .309, respectively, during that span. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 34.5 ounces. Graded A8 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 3 points for use). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat authenticator David Bushing. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
