1973 Don Kessinger Chicago Cubs Signed Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,645.00

Chicago Cubs road jersey worn by perennial All-Star shortstop Don Kessinger in 1973. The gray knit jersey is lettered “Chicago” across the front and features the number “11” on both the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue tackle twill. A “Cubby Bear” patch appears on the left sleeve. The year, “73,” is chain-stitched in blue within a box tag located on the left front tail. Kessinger has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie (grading “8/9”) on the right breast. Both the name tag and manufacturer’s label have been removed from the collar. In their stead is the number “40,” written in blue ink. Those anomalies indicate that this jersey was subsequently sent to a Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate following the 1973 season. Further supporting that theory is the fact that the jersey displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including fading to the material and loss of stitching along the reverse numerals. Aside from the removal of the name tag and manufacturer’s label from the collar, the jersey is all original. Kessinger wore number “11” with the Cubs from 1964 through 1975; therefore, the offered jersey can be definitively attributed to him. Kessinger was a six-time All-Star with the Cubs and one of the most reliable shortstops of his era. Over the course of his sixteen-year career he led the league in assists and double plays four times, putouts three times, and fielding percentage and total chances per game once each. Kessinger appeared in 160 games in 1973, batting .262 with no home runs and 43 RBI. Graded A5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with 2 points deducted for the two missing tags in the collar, 1 point deducted for the fading to the material, 1.5 points deducted for the minor league use, and .5 points deducted for the loss of stitching on the reverse numerals). Included with the jersey is a 1973 Topps baseball card (#285) of Kessinger that has been signed in blue Sharpie (“10”). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,645.00
