1952-1953 Bobby Shantz Philadelphia A's Game-Used Home Jersey

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $7,050.00

Philadelphia A's home jersey worn by former American League MVP Bobby Shantz during the early 1950s (1952-1953). Graded A10 by MEARS. Bobby Schantz was a special hero to many youngsters because for a time in the early 1950s he was the best pitcher in baseball, despite being one of the smallest. One of the magic elements of baseball is that, theoretically, any player of any size can excel and be the best. It rarely happens but it's possible. Bobby Shantz defied all odds and rose to the top of a league with players that, compared to him, were giants, and gave hope to the dreams of every little kid in every playground in Philadelphia and beyond in the early 1950s. The white flannel jersey features a large "A" on the left breast and the number "30" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in black felt. A "Pearson" label appears in the collar. Both the size ("38") and uniform number ("30") are each individually chain-stitched in black upon a separate white strip tag on the left front tail. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays moderate-to-heavy wear throughout. Although no year tag is present, this particular style jersey was only used by the A's during the two-year period 1952-1953. Bobby Shantz enjoyed the greatest season of his career in 1952. The diminutive left hander led the League in both wins (24) and winning percentage (.774) while posting a 2.48 ERA. Those numbers later earned him the MVP Award at season's end. The following season he was plagued by arm injuries and only appeared in sixteen games, finishing the year with a 5-9 record. Shantz never again approached his win total of 1952, but he remained in the Majors for another twelve years and was a member of the 1958 World Champion New York Yankees. Graded A10 by MEARS. This is one of only two Bobby Shantz jerseys listed in the MEARS census (the other is graded A9.5). This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticator David Bushing. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $7,050.00
