1951 Whitey Lockman New York Giants Signed Game-Used Home Jersey - Possible "Shot Heard Round The World" Game Jersey!

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $11,162.50

Rare New York Giants home jersey worn by first baseman Whitey Lockman during the club's historic 1951 season. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. This is both the only Whitey Lockman jersey and the only 1951 New York Giants regular-season jersey listed in the entire MEARS population report. This significant and rare jersey is further distinguished by the fact that it was prominently featured in a special exhibit held at the Museum of New York City in 2007. The exhibit, titled The Glory Days: New York Baseball 1947-1957, opened in June 2007 and featured numerous rare and important artifacts relating to New York City baseball, including this jersey. Most important of all, this may be the very jersey that Whitey Lockman was wearing as a runner on second base when Bobby Thomson hit his historic "Shot Heard Round The World." The white flannel jersey is lettered "Giants" across the front and features the number "25" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in black on orange felt. A National League "75th Anniversary" patch appears on the left sleeve. Both the name and jersey number ("Lockman 25") are chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag in the collar. Also located in the collar are an "A. G. Spalding & Bros." label and adjacent "42" size tag. The year ("51") is chain-stitched in black upon the left front tail. Lockman has signed the jersey in black marker ("7") on the left front tail, directly below the year designation. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays wear including one button having come detached (the detached button accompanies the jersey). Lockman batted .282 with 12 home runs and 73 RBI in 1951. That memorable season witnessed the Giants rallying from a 13.5 game deficit on August 11 to tie the Dodgers for first place at the end of the regular season. The Giants' amazing comeback forced a three-game playoff that culminated in Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World" in the final game. Lockman played a large role in that historic contest. The Giants trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning of the third and deciding game. Alvin Dark and Don Mueller opened the inning with singles and Lockman then doubled, driving in Dark and setting the stage for Thomson's famous home run. While we may never know for certain, there is a fifty-fifty chance that Lockman was wearing this very jersey in that game, given the fact that players were normally issued only two home and away uniforms per season. With further research, it may be possible to determine if Lockman was wearing this jersey when Bobby Thomson hit his historic home run. In either event, it remains an extremely rare and desirable home jersey of Whitey Lockman dating from the most memorable season in New York Giants history. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with a half point deducted for the detached button). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
