1939-1941 Archie McKain Detroit Tigers Jacket
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $822.50
Original Detroit Tigers team jacket worn by pitcher Archie McKain between the years 1939 and 1941. The black-cotton jacket features black-leather sleeves and a white/orange/white cloth trim along the collar, cuffs, and waist. A large gothic-style "D" is displayed on the left breast and the number "28" appears on the base of the left sleeve. Both the "D" and the number "28" have been appliquéd in orange on white twill. A "46" size tag is located in the collar, while the name "Archie McKain" is chain-stitched in navy upon an orange strip tag in the interior right tail. Original and unaltered, the jacket displays significant wear, including a number of small tears over the entire body and trim. Archie McKain played with the Tigers between the years 1939 and 1941. During that time he was the only player to wear number "28" with the club, thus definitively dating the jacket to that three-year span. McKain compiled a 12-7 record with the Tigers during his short tenure with the club. He retired in 1943 with a lifetime record of 26-21 and a 4.26 ERA. Major League team jackets dating from this period are exceedingly rare and in fact are much scarcer than jerseys. The jacket also happens by chance to date from the era of one of Detroit's greatest seasons, as the Tigers were the American League champions in 1940. Despite its flaws (common for such outerwear garments) the jacket still presents beautifully and is an exceptional and extremely rare display piece. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $822.50
