1949 Chesterfield Cigarettes Advertising Display Including Joe DiMaggio
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $587.50
Extremely rare 1949 cardboard store advertising display for Chesterfield Cigarettes. The colorful advertising piece features color portraits of five of the nation's top sports stars of the era: Joe DiMaggio, Lou Boudreau, Ben Hogan, Jack Kramer, and Frankie Albert. The advertisement includes a color portrait of each star along with their testimonials as to "...why every smoker should smoke Chesterfield." Although not dated, the piece makes note that Lou Boudreau is the Most Valuable Player in the American League. Boudreau won his first and only MVP Award in 1948, therefore dating the advertising display precisely to 1949. That same year football star Frankie Albert shared the AAFC MVP honors with Otto Graham. This is an extremely attractive display piece from a different era, back when tobacco was not known to be a danger to health and sport stars were happy to provide their enthusiastic endorsements. The piece (20.5 x 13.5 inches) is in exceptional Excellent to Mint condition. This is a very rare piece, one of only two examples we have ever offered. (The other example was in the Barry Halper Estate Collection.) Handsomely matted and framed to total dimensions of 27 x 20 inches. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
