1912 Cleveland Americans Team Panorama Including Joe Jackson
Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $5,287.50
This stunning large panorama (43.5 x 8.75 inches) captures twenty-eight members of the Cleveland Naps posing shoulder to shoulder in front of the grandstand on opening day of the 1912 season. Among the players pictured here are Joe Jackson (in just his second full season in the Majors), Nap Lajoie, Roger Peckinpaugh, Neal Ball, Terry Turner, Steve O'Neill, Vean Gregg, Ivy Olson, and Fred Blanding. Each player has been neatly identified in black fountain pen directly below his respective image, with the name corresponding to a handwritten number on each player's uniform. The handwritten notation, "Opening day. Taken at Cleveland Ohio - Attendance 25000 - April 12th 1912," appears in black fountain pen in the lower right. The photographer's credit, "Margerm & Adams - Copyright," is scripted in white in the lower left. The photo has benefited from professional restoration, mainly with regard to a vertical center tear; there is a small area of surface paper loss in the center of the photo which is quite unobtrusive due to the fact that blends into the white of a player's jersey. Without reference to the restoration, the photograph is in Excellent condition, with perfect contrast. This is a museum-caliber piece of the highest quality. Rarely does any panoramic team photograph display so majestically. These were obviously very expensive to produce, and it is very likely that these panoramic photographs were produced only for team officials and players. We have never seen another example of this display photograph. The fact that this team includes Joe Jackson gives it all the more appeal for many different types of collections. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 49 x 14.25 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
