1914 Boston Red Sox Team Panorama

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00

Taken at Boston's fabled Fenway Park in 1914, this exceptional panoramic photo captures twenty-five members of the Boston Red Sox as they pose shoulder to shoulder in front of the dugout. Included in the crystal-clear photo are future Hall of Fame players Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper, as well as Ernie Shore, "Smokey" Joe Wood, player/manager Bill Carrigan, Dutch Leonard, Ernie Shore, Rube Foster, Pinch Thomas, Dick Hoblitzell, Ray Collins, and Duffy Lewis. Each player is identified in white lettering directly below his respective image. The photographer's copyright notice, "1914 Darley and George," appears along the bottom border. The white-lettered caption along the base reads "Boston 'Red Sox' American League at Fenway Park, Aug. 19, 1914." Collectors and historians alike will forever lament the date of this photo, for it was only nine days earlier, on August 5th, that the Red Sox sent a rookie pitcher by the name of Babe Ruth to their minor league affiliate in Providence for a little more seasoning. The team pictured here, however, represents the nucleus of the Red Sox's 1915-1918 baseball dynasty. On the day of this photo the Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the White Sox, winning the first game 3-1 and the nightcap 4-1. Those two victories pushed their record to 61-47, the second best mark in baseball at the time. Unfortunately, the best record in baseball belonged to the Philadelphia A's, who eventually captured their second consecutive pennant that season. Although the Red Sox failed to catch the A's, the Boston faithful had the last laugh as Philadelphia was swept in the World Series by the legendary "Miracle" Boston Braves. The photo (35.5 x 8 inches) displays outstanding clarity and contrast, and remains in remarkable condition given its age and impressive size. Aside from a small area of edge wear along the top border (hidden behind the frame) and a very light emulsion in the lower right corner (not affecting the image area) the photo is in outstanding Near Mint condition. Framed to total dimensions of 37.5 x 9.75 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
