1925 J. Honus Wagner For Sheriff Pinback
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50
Extremely rare campaign button from Honus Wagner's run for Sheriff of Allegheny County in 1925 following his playing days. This is one of the all-time great baseball celluloid pinbacks. Many rare baseball pins are part of a set, but this classic Wagner pin is actually a stand-alone campaign button. Its extreme rarity is no doubt related to the fact that this was for a local campaign for a relatively minor office, and that few were made. The budget for this campaign was probably very small. Despite his great popularity as a player, Wagner unfortunately lost the election. This pin is one of the few items from this campaign known. Many collectors will remember seeing this pin, not in person, but as one of the select items featured on the cover of the famous 1991 Copeland catalog. Over the years we have seen fewer than ten examples. In our opinion, this is one of the best of all baseball celluloid pinbacks. Although this pin cannot compare in value to the T206 Wagner, there is no doubt that it is considerably rarer. The original back paper on the reverse is intact. Manufactured by the Kant Novelty Company of Pittsburgh, PA. Excellent condition. Diameter: 1 inch. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
