"Gehrig-Ruth" Limited-Edition Bronze Statue by Palmer Murphy

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25

Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are frozen in time in this extraordinarily detailed bronze statue by renowned artist Palmer Murphy. This rare piece was created in 1999, as noted by the copyright date engraved along the right border of the bronze base, and was issued the following year, in 2000, by Southland Art Castings, Inc. A Southland Art Castings plaque affixed to the bottom of the wood base displays the name of the piece "Gehrig-Ruth" and makes note that this is one of a limited number of artist's proofs, "AP/7." The extremely limited production run explains why we have never seen this piece offered before. We have seen one pewter-cast example, which appeared as Lot #513 in the REA 2004 auction and sold for $2,185. This is a bronze, and in the art world bronzes are universally recognized as far superior to pewter-cast statues, and are also considerably more costly to produce. Palmer Murphy has signed the bottom of the wooden base in black marker (grading "10"). Although this is a modern work, Murphy has crafted the piece in the tradition of classic baseball figural art of the nineteenth century; it is rare to see a figural work of such uncompromising quality and high-production values today. This statue was a special project fully licensed by the estate of Babe Ruth and produced in honor of the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth's birth. Murphy is best known for his bronze statues, and his work has been displayed at both the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. This is an extremely high quality work of art which could be displayed proudly in many settings and different types of collections. Height: 12 inches. Weight: 17 pounds. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
