Mickey Mantle's Personal 1977 Old Timers' Game Watch
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25
Gold pocket watch issued to Mickey Mantle in honor of his participation in the 1977 New York Mets Old Timer's Day Game held at Shea Stadium. This is Mantle's personal watch, which he kept as a special keepsake. It was purchased by our consignor at the famed Mickey Mantle estate auction, held at Madison Square Garden in 2003. A signed certificate from the Mantle family, as well as the original Mickey Mantle Auction tag accompanies. The pocket watch features Mantle's engraved initials, "MM," on the front cover, while the interior is inscribed "Old Timers Day — Shea Stadium — New York — 1977." The watch face displays the team name, "Mets." Personal keepsakes such as this are quite scarce, especially those belonging to a player of Mantle's stature. Most of the time family members, who would never think of parting with them due to their sentimental value, pass them down from generation to generation, thus accounting for their rarity today. Fortunately for collectors, the Mantle family decided to part with nearly all of Mantle's personal belongings in a historic sale in 2003, thereby making available a number of items that normally would never be found on the open market. This watch is one of those special, unique pieces and one that would make for a significant addition to many different types of collections. When this watch was sold at the Mantle auction in 2003, the price realized was $8,260. The watch is in perfect working order and displays only general light wear. In Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,231.25
