1952 NY Yankees World Champions Black Bat Issued to Mickey Mantle

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75

This New York Yankees 1952 World Championship black bat was awarded to Mickey Mantle and was later displayed for many years at his hotel: Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn of Joplin, Missouri. The black H&B commemorative bat is stamped "New York Yankees World Champions 1952" and features the gilt-stamped names (either in block letter or facsimile autograph) of thirty team members, including Mantle, Stengel, Rizzuto, Berra, Mize, Martin, and Dickey. World Series black bats were only issued to team members and front-office personnel. This is the very bat issued to Mickey Mantle as a member of the 1952 Yankees and it is accompanied by a notarized LOA from Louis McDonald, written on Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn of Joplin stationery, that reads in full: "To Whom It May Concern: I certify that this 1952 World Series Championship Black Bat was awarded to Mickey Mantle, and later given by Mickey Mantle to the Mickey Mantle Motel Corporation, where it was displayed as part of the motel's decor along with his other awards and trophies. I hope you enjoy this rare and valuable piece of nostalgia." Louis McDonald purchased a large portion of the Mantle memorabilia on display at the motel from H. D. Youngman, who was the longtime Vice President of the Mickey Mantle Motel Corporation. Ideally, the bat also comes with the original gift card and envelope from Hillerich and Bradsby that reads "Compliments And Best Wishes of Hillerich & Bradsby Co." The bat displays a few minor surface marks, including a very light scratch on the back of the barrel, and is in overall Excellent to Mint condition. A unique and highly significant black bat dating from Mantle's first full season in the Major Leagues. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
