1953 Roy Campanella World Series Home Run Ball (Game 3, 8th Inning)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,292.50

Offered here is a unique souvenir from the 1953 World Series between the Yankees and Dodgers: an actual home run ball hit by Roy Campanella in Game 3 at Ebbets Field. Campanella’s Game 3 solo home run, which occurred in the eighth inning of a tight pitcher’s duel between the Yankees' Vic Raschi and the Dodgers' Carl Erskine, proved to be the winning margin in the Dodgers 3-2 victory. The official National League (Giles) ball has vintage black-ink notations printed on the ball, occupying two side panels and the sweet spot, obviously dating from 1953 and commemorating the ball’s place in history: “Home Run Ball Hit By Roy Campanella Brooklyn Dodgers – World Series Dodgers-Yankees – 10/2/53 – Ebbets Field – Caught by Arnie Sempter – Left Field Stands – Seat 11 Row 1 Sec 18.” Despite the fact that the ball is accompanied by no other documentation, we have every reason to believe that this ball is exactly what it appears to be: an actual Campy home-run ball from the 1953 World Series. Research indicates that Campanella’s eighth-inning home run was hit deep into the left-field stands (precisely consistent with the information on the ball) and the writing on this ball, which is incredibly detailed, was obviously applied decades ago. The ball also displays wear consistent with a game-used ball, including moderate soiling and a number of light abrasions. All notated balls require some leap of faith, and while it is a given that no representative of REA was on hand to witness Arnie Sempter's catch during the 1953 World Series, we've been doing this a long time, and based on all the qualities of the ball and the writing, we think the leap of faith on this one is zero. We like this ball. This ball represents the second of Campanella’s four World Series home runs and his only one from the 1953 World Series. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
