1920s/1930s Babe Ruth Clothing Collection (9)
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
This collection of diverse items, which includes baseball uniforms, caps, gloves, belts, and yes, even an underwear box, all have one thing in common: each article bears the endorsement and/or name of Babe Ruth. 1) Circa 1927 Babe Ruth Underwear Box. One of the classic Ruth retail pieces, this box, which once housed six pairs of Babe Ruth's men's underwear, features a large portrait image of Ruth on the cover. 10 x 12.5 x 2.5 inches. Gd, with tape repairs to a number of tears along the edges and corners. 2) Circa 1930s Babe Ruth youth baseball uniform (jersey, pants, belt, and hat). The gray jersey is "Babe Ruth" across the front and features a faded "Official Babe Ruth Uniform" patch on the left sleeve. The jersey displays heavy wear, while the matching pants, belt, and cap display very little, if any, wear. 3) Circa 1930s "Bambino" beanie cap. The red-and-yellow beanie features the name "Bambino" embroidered in white on the front, below which is a crossed-bats-and-ball motif. Ex-Mt. 4) Circa 1930s "The Babe Ruth Cap" for men. The navy men's hat is accompanied by the original retail tag that features both a portrait image of Ruth wearing this cap and a smaller illustration of him in a batting pose. The tag identifies the cap as "The Babe Ruth Cap - for Men and Young Men." Manufactured by Victor. The cap displays no wear and appears just as it did when first produced. The rare retail tag is torn in half, but both halves are present. 5-7) Three Babe Ruth youth baseball caps. One is navy and features the name "Babe Ruth" embroidered in white on the front. The second is gray, with a black brim, and features a diamond patch on the front bearing the name "Babe Ruth" embroidered in white. The third is similar in color and design to the second, but features a different shaped diamond patch on the front with the name "Babe Ruth" embroidered in white. The first two caps display heavy wear, including light staining and a few minor tears, while the third displays light wear. 8) Babe Ruth youth belt. The brown leather belt features a silver colored buckle displaying an image of Ruth in a batting pose (in raised relief). Lettered above the image is "Babe Ruth" and below, "Junior Baseball Champs." The buckle is Vg, with light tarnishing and a number of minor abrasions. The belt is Ex-Mt. 9) Circa 1930 "Baby Ruth" youth baseball glove issued by the Curtiss Candy Company. While not technically a Ruth endorsed item, it is widely believed today that the "Baby Ruth" candy bar, introduced in 1921, was named after Ruth, although he received no money for the appropriated use of his name (Curtiss claimed the candy bar was named after former President Grover Cleveland's daughter Ruth). The glove is stamped "Curtiss Baby Ruth Candy & Gum" in the palm. Displays heavy wear and use. Total: 9 items. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,527.50
