Babe Ruth Hall of Fame Ring (Sample)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00

This Babe Ruth Hall of Fame induction ring is a handsome piece of 10K gold jewelry produced many years ago in the likeness of the rings presented by the Baseball Hall of Fame to new inductees (a practice which began in the 1960s). This is a sample ring, as opposed to a ring actually presented to Ruth upon his induction. This sample is what Babe Ruth's ring would have looked like had the practice been in place in 1936. The exact year of this ring’s production is unknown, but probably dates to the time of the first production of Hall of Fame induction rings. The top of the ring features a gold baseball set upon a black background with "Baseball Hall of Fame” lettered along the edge in relief. The name “Ruth” is engraved on the right shank, below which are a crossed bat and ball design and a banner that is engraved, “Elected 1936.” The left shank features Ruth’s position, “Outfielder,” engraved on a banner, below which are an image of the Hall of Fame and a smaller banner reading “The National Baseball Hall of Fame.” “10K" is engraved on the interior band. To the right of the “10K” engraving is a small engraved box containing an ornately designed “S” (possibly designating the ring as a sample?). Very few rings are more exclusive and prized by their recipients than Hall of Fame rings. Understandably, very few are ever offered for public sale. They tend to be kept by the players and their families. This Babe Ruth Hall of Fame sample ring is one of only two known examples, both of which originate from the same consignor. The other example was also handled by Robert Edward Auctions and appeared as Lot 804 in our April 2005 sale, where it realized a final price of $10,440. Interestingly, the other example was slightly different in design, further supporting the fact that both rings were created as samples. This ring offers collectors a very rare opportunity to acquire a Hall of Fame induction ring, designed as if presented to Babe Ruth, at a fraction of what an example actually presented to a player would sell for, if available. The ring displays moderate wear throughout and is in overall Excellent condition. Size: approximately 10.75. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
