1937 & 1939 New York Yankees World Champions Brown and Black Bats (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Offered here are two exceptionally early, rare, and desirable New York Yankees black bats dating, respectively, from the club's World Championship seasons of 1937 and 1939. The 1937 example, which is actually a brown bat (H&B issued brown bats from 1934 through 1937, then black bats every year thereafter), is stamped "World Champions 1937" and features the gilt-stamped names (either in block letter or facsimile autograph) of twenty-seven team members, including Gehrig, DiMaggio, McCarthy, Dickey, Gomez, Lazzeri, Combs, and Ruffing. This particular bat once resided in the famed Barry Halper Collection and was obtained by our consignor at the historic sale of Halper's collection in 1999. The original auction tag still accompanies the bat. Excellent to Mint condition. The 1939 black bat is stamped "New York Yankees World Champions 1939" and features the gilt-stamped names (either in block letter or facsimile autograph) of twenty-seven team members, including Gehrig, DiMaggio, McCarthy, Dickey, Gomez, Combs, and Ruffing. 1939 marked not only Gehrig's final season with Yankees, making this one of the great prizes of all Yankee black bats, but also the club's then record fourth consecutive World Championship. Near Mint condition. Black bats have always been recognized as classics among memorabilia collectors, but for some reason have had a low profile among among collectors in recent years. These two bats are among the rarest and most desirable of all H&B commemorative bats ever issued to players and executives as keepsakes. Total: 2 bats. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/2,000.
