1939 All-America Board of Baseball Sweater (Bucky Walters)

Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Today, nearly all collectors are familiar with the beautiful All-America Board of Baseball Award Certificates issued to an All-Star team of players selected by Babe Ruth and a board of leading sportswriters during the late 1920s and 1930s, as they are among the most desirable and attractive of all Babe Ruth signed pieces in existence. Each player selected to this All-Star team also received a colorful, specially produced All-America sweater in honor of being chosen as one of baseball's finest. Offered here is an outstanding example of an All-America Board of Baseball presentation sweater issued to pitcher Bucky Walters in 1939. The blue sweater displays a patriotic red-white-blue shield patch, featuring a baseball at the top, on the front chest. Both the waist and cuffs are trimmed in red and white. An official "All-America Board of Baseball" label appears in the collar. The sweater is in Excellent to Mint condition. These sweaters are extremely rare (in fact, surprisingly, much rarer than their corresponding certificates). Over the years we have seen only a few other surviving examples. These sweaters did not have the player's name anywhere on it, and therefore each is identical. This particular sweater, as noted, was awarded to Bucky Walters, although the sweater does not feature Walters' name (nor is it supposed to). We know it is Walters' simply because it originates directly from the sale of the Bucky Walters' estate (which even included his corresponding All-American Board of Baseball certificate) that was sold at auction years ago, and was purchased at that auction by our consignor. It is in every way identical to the All-America Board of Baseball sweaters awarded to other players over the years, representing a who's who of baseball greats of the 1920s and 1930s (Gehrig, Foxx, Dean, etc.). Its rarity, significance, and visual appeal notwithstanding, this sweater is a very rare and ideal example of one of baseball's early and most prestigious annual awards. A stunning display could be created if it was possible for this sweater to be paired together with an original All-America Board of Baseball Certificate awarded to any player. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
