1927 Lou Gehrig News Photo

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50

This original news photo of Lou Gehrig dates from the historic 1927 season and relates to his memorable “home run duel” with Ruth. The photo captures Gehrig in extreme close up as he eyes the field while standing in front of the dugout. An Underwood & Underwood credit stamp appears on the reverse. Accompanying the photo is the original wire caption (present but detached from the reverse), dated “6/30/27,” which reads in part: “Lou Gehrig, first baseman of the New York Yankees and leading batsman of the American League, ties Babe Ruth for season’s home run record by scoring his 24th circuit drive.” Ruth and Gehrig were tied for the home run lead for much of the season before Ruth pulled away by clouting seventeen home runs in September. Ruth, of course, finished the season with his long-standing record of sixty home runs. Gehrig’s total of forty-seven home runs was the second-highest total in baseball that year. The hoopla associated with their home run rivalry that year gave rise to a much heralded postseason barnstorming tour, the success of which resulted in their staging a second tour the following off-season as well. The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches), which presents with outstanding clarity, displays a few very minor creases and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Original 1927 news photos of Ruth and Gehrig are rare and naturally highly prized by collectors. There are far fewer 1927 photographs of Lou Gehrig than of the more outgoing Ruth. This is an outstanding example, made all the more desirable by the presence of the original wire caption. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
