1910 Boston Red Sox Promotional Display Calendar

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

This rare and decorative promotional calendar, issued by the Boston Red Sox for the 1910 season, displays the team’s complete season schedule surrounded by portrait images of twenty members of the team: Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Wood, Ed Cicotte, Duffy Lewis, Bill Carrigan, Patsy Donovan (Mgr.), Amby McConnell, Jack Thoney, Larry Gardner, Ed Karger, Charlie Smith, Ray Collins, Jake Stahl, Frank Arellanes, Harry Niles, Hap Myers, Charley Hall, Heinie Wagner, and Harry Lord. The display features the team name, “Boston American League Red Sox,” along the top and is lettered “Compliments of the Boston American” along the base. Despite the team’s fourth-place finish in 1910, eleven of the players pictured here were later key members of the Red Sox’s 1912 World Championship club, including seven of the eight starting players and mound ace “Smokey” Joe Wood. Ed Cicotte’s name was immortalized nine years later, but for all the wrong reasons. Cicotte was one of the main culprits in the infamous Black Sox scandal in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox were ultimately banished from baseball for conspiring to “throw” the 1919 World Series. Calendars were not intended to be saved; the fragile composition of this promotional piece probably makes it all the rarer. The calendar (10 x 14 inches) is printed on thin paper stock and while it is impossible to say how many have survived, we are certain it is very few, and it would be hard to imagine a finer example. Except for a tiny edge tear in the upper right and a few tiny surface wrinkles (visible only from the blank-back reverse), the calendar has a spectacular Near Mint appearance. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
