1908 Detroit Tigers Championship Pennant Badges (2)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

The success of the pennant-winning 1908 Detroit Tigers generated a tremendous enthusiasm among Tigers fans. Presented are two extremely rare and substantial 1908 Detroit Tigers badges which we have never seen before, and which were produced to wear and show support for the team, probably specifically at the 1908 World Series. These are an extraordinary find. Each piece is similar in design and is comprised of a colorful double-sided circular cardboard display piece, attached to which are two ribbons, one in black and the other in gold. The smaller of the two pieces (2.25 inches in diameter, 6.5 inches long) features an illustration of a tiger head, lettered above which is the word, “WE-A-A-AH.” (“We-a-a-ah” was the bloodcurdling trademark yell made famous by the team’s manager Hughie Jennings, who would exhort that battle cry throughout each game to inspire his club). Lettered below the tiger head is the team name, “Detroit Tigers.” The larger piece (5 inches in diameter, 12.5 inches long) is nearly identical in design, but is lettered “Champion Tigers” below the tiger head, and the ribbons are lettered “Pennant” and “1908,” respectively. Each piece bears an attached string tie along the top for hanging from one's lapel, and the cardboard displays are double sided (same image on each side). These are the first examples of either of these magnificent badges we have ever seen. Their rarity and great display value aside, these pieces are also in remarkable with condition. Each was obviously very carefully stored these past one hundred years and as a result they display in much the same manner as when produced in 1908. Put these on and you're ready for the game! Unfortunately, the Cubs won the 1908 World Series, but the hope for a Detroit victory and the excitement of the Series survive with the display of the these magnificent ribbon badges. The smaller example displays only light handling wear and is in Excellent to Mint condition. The larger piece is in phenomenal Near Mint condition. Total: 2 items. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,057.50
