1899-1900 M101-1 The Sporting News Collection Including Billy Hamilton (5)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Collection of five different M101-1 Sporting News supplements (all from 1900): Thomas Corcoran, Billy Hamilton (HOF), Samuel Leever, Claude Ritchey, and Edward Scott. This extremely rare sepia-tone premium set was issued with The Sporting News during the years 1899 and 1900. These premiums are designed like large cards, with an elaborate design and biography on the reverse. Each premium was issued on only a single day (thus in part explaining their great rarity) and is dated in the upper right. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This lot is highlighted by Hall of Famer Billy Hamilton. The Billy Hamilton premium was issued on July 21, 1900, and features the future Hall of Fame legend as a center fielder with the Boston Beaneaters. It is particularly interesting to note that the image on this premium is copyrighted by "E. Chickering, Boston." Chickering was one of the top photographers in Boston at this time, and was particularly noted for his images of Boston ballplayers. Hamilton has two pinholes along the top and bottom edge and a torn corner in the extreme upper right. The pencil notation "230" is written on the reverse. While technically in approximately Good condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a much stronger appearance. It would be hard to find another in any condition. The four remaining premiums share the same flaws as the Hamilton. Overall these extremely rare supplements are visually very pleasing despite their minor technical flaws. Dimensions: each approximately 8.75 x 11 inches. Total: 5 supplements. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
