1866 Haney's Base Ball Reference
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,292.50
Rare early baseball guide, titled Haney's Base Ball Reference , written by Henry Chadwick in 1866. Published by J. C. Haney & Co., New York. This informative seventy-six-page guide includes the rules of the game, season averages for the 1865 season, and a list of the prominent teams and their respective secretaries. Haney's baseball guides, which were issued annually, were only published for a short time during the 1860s (Haney sold the rights to the guide to Peck & Snyder in 1869), thus they are much scarcer than similar baseball guides from the era. The guide retains its original cloth covers, but the book has been professionally rebound. Both the original title page and one other interior page have been replaced by copies. The vintage pencil notation, "1866 — 2nd Edition" appears on the front cover. In Very Good condition overall. Housed in in a custom-made leather-bound slipcase with gilt lettering on the spine. This book once resided in the comprehensive baseball library of famed collector Barry Halper and was sold, along with the majority of his collection, in the famous 1999 Barry Halper Auction. The original auction label accompanies the book. Reserve $200. Estimate $300/$500. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
