1961 Roger Maris Original UPI News Photograph - 61st Home Run
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $587.50
The culmination of Roger Maris' historic 1961 season is captured here, for all posterity, in this original United Press International news photo. Maris is pictured in mid-swing as he connects for his record breaking 61st home run in the final game of the season at Yankee Stadium. This is the ultimate photo of one of baseball's greatest moments. While many different news photos of this moment exist, the offered photo is exceptional, not simply because it is an original, but because it also captures the flight of the ball, which can be seen in the top right corner of the photo. (Most of the other photos are cropped much tighter and only show Maris.) The original wire caption, dated 10/2/61, is stamped on the reverse, as is a faded United Press International proprietary stamp. The photo (8.25 x 6.5 inches) displays flawless clarity and is in apparent Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13.5 x 11.75 inches. A color copy of the photo's reverse accompanies the piece for display purposes. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $587.50
