1939 Hall of Fame First-Day Cover Signed by Ten of the Eleven Attending Inductees (Ruth, Cobb, Johnson, Young, etc.) Plus Other Honored Guests
Starting Bid - $1,500.00 , Sold For - $12,925.00
In 1939, in an unprecedented event of such magnitude, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Walter Johnson, Cy Young, and many other baseball luminaries gathered in one place in celebration of baseball's rich history. The dedication of the baseball Hall of Fame took place on June 12, 1939, and was the highlight of baseball's year-long 100th anniversary celebration. On that historic day twenty-six players were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sixteen of the inductees had already passed away, but the remaining eleven all attended the ceremonies. Offered here is a remarkable large-format Centennial of Baseball first-day cover signed by ten of those eleven original inductees (missing only Honus Wagner), plus eleven other dignitaries in attendance that day, including five future Hall of Famers. The ten original inductees featured here are Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Larry Lajoie, Eddie Collins, Grover Alexander, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, Cy Young, and Connie Mack. The remaining eleven signatures are those of Joe McCarthy, William Harridge, Clark Griffith, Ford Frick, Kenesaw Landis, "Doc" Protho, Vincent Dailey, William Shaughnessy, James Heydler, W. G. Bramham (President of the Minor Leagues), and James Farley (Postmaster General). These signatures were assembled during the festivities on this ideal item by a collector who obviously appreciated the historical significance of this great event, and wanted to create and preserve an ultimate keepsake. All of the signatures have been penned in black fountain pen, with the exception of Farley (green ink) and grade either "9" or "10." The envelope (9.5 x 4.25 inches), postmarked "June 12 1939 — Cooperstown, NY," displays a few small border tears (one of which affects the Landis signature), a small corner crease, and a tiny area of light discoloration along the base that touches upon the Collins signature. These very minor flaws do not significantly detract from the piece's extremely strong visual appeal and the envelope presents as Excellent. We have never seen another single item signed by so many inductees and special honored guests of this historic celebration. Included with the first day cover, and perfect for display with it, is an original forty-page program (Vg-Ex) from the 1939 Hall of Fame dedication ceremonies. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $12,925.00
