Exceptional Early Hall of Fame News-Photo Collection Including Conlon Photo of Cobb (13)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25

This collection of thirteen extremely high quality early twentieth-century original news photos is comprised exclusively of images of Hall of Fame players. This very substantial collection has many highlights including a Charles Conlon photo of Ty Cobb, a George Grantham Bain photo of Tris Speaker, and individual photos of the legendary double-play trio, Tinker, Evers, and Chance. 1) Ty Cobb. As a member of the Tigers, circa 1913. Pictured leaping to catch a ball. "Charles Conlon - Evening Telegram - New York" is stamped on the reverse. Also on the reverse is the vintage pencil notation "1913." 4.5 x 7.5 inches. Ex, with a few light creases. 2) Tris Speaker. As a member of the Indians, circa 1919. Pictured posing on the top step of the dugout. A "Photo by Bain News Service" stamp and various "Culver Pictures, Inc." stamps appear on the reverse. 5 x 7 inches. Ex. 3) Nap Lajoie. As a member of the A's, circa 1915. Pictured holding a bat. Although the photo was taken in either 1915 or 1916 (based on the uniform style), the "International Newsreel" stamping on the reverse dates to the period 1922-1928. 6 x 8 inches. Vg-Ex. 4) Willie Keeler. As a member of the Highlanders, circa 1907. Pictured holding a bat. A "Spooner & Wells" stamp appears on the reverse. 4.25 x 5.25 inches. Trimmed to current dimensions, otherwise Vg-Ex. 5) Frank Chance and Hughie Jennings. As members of the Cubs and Tigers, respectively, circa 1907. The two are pictured posing together on field, indicating that the photo was most likely taken at either the 1907 or 1908 World Series. A "Burke & Koretke" stamp appears on the reverse. 9 x 7 inches. Apparent Ex-Mt condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 14.5 x 12.5 inches. A color copy of the reverse of the photo is included. 6) John McGraw and Christy Mathewson. As members of the Giants and Reds, respectively, in 1916 (based on the uniform styles). The two are pictured on field shaking hands. Although this photograph was taken in 1916, shortly after Mathewson was traded from the Giants to the Reds, the "International News Photos" ink stamping on the reverse dates to the period 1949-1957, though the print itself may date much earlier (if not for our dating the ink stamp we would assume this was from 1916). 6.25 x 8.25 inches. In apparent Ex-Mt condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.5 x 13.5 inches. A color copy of the reverse of the photo is included. 7) Joe Tinker. As a member of the Cubs, circa 1912. Pictured in a fielding pose. The photo is date stamped "Jun 16 1913" but the uniform style pictured here was only used by the Cubs in 1911 and 1912. 7 x 9 inches. With a large corner chip in the upper left. Gd-Vg. 8) Johnny Evers. As a member of the Cubs, circa 1908. Pictured in a batting pose. Both a "The N. Y. H. Service" and a "The Cleveland News" stamp appear on the reverse. Also stamped on the reverse is the date "Oct 9," indicating that this photo was most likely taken during one of the club's World Series years of 1907, 1908, or 1910. (The uniform style matches that worn in each of those years.) 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Vg-Ex. 9) Frank Chance. As a member of the New York Yankees, either in 1913 or 1914 (his only two years with the club). Pictured at first base catching a ball. A "The International News Service" stamp appears on the reverse (dating from the 1912-1915 time period), as well as "The Cleveland News" stamp." The date, "5/12/13" is written on the reverse in pencil. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Some light editorial enhancement, otherwise Ex. 10) Tris Speaker. As a member of the Boston Red Sox, circa 1910. Pictured warming up on the side lines. The photo is affixed to a cardboard mount that has a "Culver Pictures, Inc." stamp on the reverse. 6.5 x 5 inches. Vg-Ex. 11) Walter Johnson. As a member of the Senators, circa 1914. Pictured warming up on the sidelines. Numerous "Culver Pictures, Inc." stamps appear on the reverse. 6 x 9 inches. Light surface paper loss along the very bottom, otherwise Ex. 12) Grover Alexander. As a member of the Phillies, circa 1915. Pictured warming up on the sidelines. Two "Culver Pictures, Inc." stamps appear on the reverse. A handwritten pencil notation on the reverse reads in part "Photo from The Ring." 8 x 10 inches. Vg. 13) George Sisler. As a member of the Braves, 1930. Pictured leaping for a throw at first base. An "Acme Newspictures" stamp appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "Mar 15 1930." Includes the original wire caption. 6 x 8 inches. Ex. Total: 13 photos. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406.25
