Circa 1948 Jackie Robinson Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00
Official National League (Frick) ball signed by Jackie Robinson on a side panel. Robinson has inscribed the ball "Best Wishes Jackie Robinson" in blue ball-point pen. Both the salutation and signature grade "5." The manufacturer's stampings, which define this as a 1946 to 1951 baseball, remain bold and legible. A light area of discoloration touches upon the signature but in no way affects its legibility. The ball also exhibits light toning and a few minor abrasions. Very Good condition overall. Jackie Robinson's ability on the field notwithstanding, he is also one of the most important figures of the twentieth century due to his breaking of baseball's color barrier in 1947. That feat not only paved the way for full integration over the next few years but also signaled a turning point with regard to racial equality in American society. Vintage single-signed Jackie Robinson balls such as this example are extremely rare and among the most desirable of all postwar Hall of Famer signed balls. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
