Babe Ruth (1927 World Series) and Lou Gehrig (2,000th Consecutive Game) Special Event News Photos (2)

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00

Each of these two original news photos captures Ruth and Gehrig in action, respectively, and dates from a noteworthy game. 1) The first pictures Ruth at the plate during the 1927 World Series and is a magnificent study of his classic home-run swing. A "Harry M. Stevens, Inc., New York Yankees" proprietary stamp appears on the reverse, as do a number of vintage editorial markings and the notation "1927 W.S." Ruth culminated his historic 1927 season by leading the Yankees to a four-game sweep of the Pirates in the World Series. Not surprisingly, Ruth was the hitting star of the Series, batting .400 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays a few light surface wrinkles (most of which are visible only when viewed at a certain angle) and is in apparent Excellent condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.25 x 13.25 inches. 2) The second photo, which offers exceptional clarity and contrast, pictures Gehrig in action at first base as he plays in his 2,000th consecutive game in 1938. Ideally, because Gehrig is captured in the act of throwing, his number "4" can easily be seen on the back of his jersey. An "Acme Newspictures, Inc." stamp appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "6/6/38." Also attached to the reverse is the original wire caption that reads "Gehrig's in action at first base as he made a putout in the sixth inning. He was playing in his 2000th consecutive game." The photo (7 x 8.75 inches) also displays a few light surface wrinkles (most of which are visible only when viewed at a certain angle) and is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 12.75 x 14.5 inches. Total: 2 photos. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
