Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig News Photo Collection (6)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,880.00
Collection of six extremely high-quality original photos each picturing either Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig. 1) 1927 news photo picturing four key members of the Yankees' famed "Murderers' Row" posing together in front of the grandstand: Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Mark Koenig, and Joe Dugan. This is one of the all-time great 1927 Yankees photos. An International Newsreel stamp appears on the reverse, as do two date stamps, the earliest of which reads "Oct 23 1927." 6 x 8 inches. Vg-Ex. 2) 1932 World Series news photo picturing Babe Ruth crossing the plate after the first of his two home runs in Game 3 at Chicago. Gehrig and Joe Sewell are also pictured greeting him as he approaches the plate. Game 3 of the 1932 World Series is famous for Ruth's "Called Shot" in the fifth inning. What many people don't recall is that that legendary home run was Ruth's second home run of the game (Gehrig also hit two home runs in that game). This photo captures him following his first "forgotten" home run in the first inning. Rarely does one see such a magnificent original photo of Ruth crossing the plate after a home run, with Gehrig patiently waiting with bat in hand, let alone one from such a significant game. Great composition to this photo. An Acme Newspictures, Inc., stamp appears on the reverse, as does the original wire caption, dated 10/1/32. The date stamp 10/6/1932" also appears on the reverse. 9 x 7 inches. Ex. 3) 1937 news photo capturing Gehrig in extreme closeup. Two period newspaper photos of this image on the reverse cover the news photo stamp (appears to be Acme). Numerous date stamps are visible, the earliest of which is "Jul-4 1937." 5 x 7 inches. Vg, with a few small tears and tack holes. 4) 1938 news photo of Gehrig posing on the field with Yankees manager Joe McCarthy and team owner Jacob Ruppert. An International News Photos stamp appears on the reverse. Date stamped "Mar 17 1938." 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Vg-Ex. 5) Circa early 1940s photo of Gehrig at first base. Undated, possibly printed a few years after his death, this is an exceptional photo of Gehrig with flawless clarity and contrast. Stamped "11. Lou Gehrig" on the reverse. 4 x 5 inches. Nr-Mt. 6) Circa 1932/1933 New York Yankees team photo. Classic team pose pictures twenty-nine members of the club including Ruth, Gehrig, McCarthy, Lazzari, Dickey, Crosetti, Pennock, Gomez, and Sewell. Based upon the players pictured, the year can be narrowed to either 1932 or 1933. An International News Photos, Inc., stamp appears on the reverse. 8 x 6 inches. Ex. Total: 6 photos. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
