Charles Conlon 1912 World Series Photo - Mathewson, McGraw, and Robinson

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25

Charles Conlon is widely considered to be the finest baseball photographer of the early twentieth century and much of baseball's early pictorial history comes to us through his gifted lens. Offered here is what is undoubtedly one of his finest images, both in composition and subject matter. This original photo, taken at Fenway Park during the 1912 World Series, captures John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, and Wilbert Robinson casually standing in front of the dugout as they survey the field prior to a game. Ideally, Conlon's own handwritten notations appear on the reverse in pencil, which read "'Giants Board of Strategy' at Boston in World Series of 1912, when Matty lost the last and deciding game through Snodgrass' historic muff — Robinson-McGraw-Matty — Watching Red Sox pitchers warming up before game." Mathewson and the Giants lost a heartbreaker in the 1912 World Series, when, in the tenth inning of the eighth and deciding game (one game ended in a tie), center fielder Fred Snodgrass dropped an easy fly ball. Although his error only allowed the potential tying run to reach base, and another equally bad error of omission, made by Mathewson, occurred later in the same inning, Snodgrass has forever borne the blame for the Series loss. The fact that Conlon refers to Snodgrass' muff as "historic" implies that this photo was printed (from the original negative) a short time later, possibly in the early twenties, as opposed to 1912. Regardless, it remains an original Conlon photo from the period with the added bonus of bearing his personal written commentary on the reverse. The photograph (8.25 x 6.5 inches), which displays flawless clarity and contrast, is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been beautifully matted and framed to total dimensions of 13 x 11.25 inches. A color copy of the photo's reverse accompanies the piece for display purposes. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
