Roger Maris Single-Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $2,232.50
Official American League (MacPhail) baseball inscribed on a side panel by Roger Maris. The blue-ink inscription, which reads "To Stephen - Best always to a great fan - Roger Maris," encompasses the entire panel and grades a perfect "10." Based upon the manufacturing labels, this ball dates from between 1974 and 1976. (This is a Spalding ball. The Rawlings brand name appeared on all Major League balls beginning in 1977.) Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Maris passed away prematurely in 1983, just prior to the "signing show boom," thus resulting in the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. Maris is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era signatures. This tremendous Maris single-signed ball ranks among the finest we have ever seen. With all the problem "Maris" balls we have encountered in the marketplace, an elaborately inscribed Maris ball such as this should be worth a premium. The ball displays a few small abrasions on the side panel opposite the signature (not visible when the ball is properly displayed) and the manufacturer's stampings are light but legible. Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,232.50
