1920 The Home Run King Signed by Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

Hard-bound first edition of The Home Run King by Babe Ruth (A. L. Burt Company, New York, 1920), signed by Ruth on the cover. The cover features a "silhouette" likeness of a player in mid-swing (modeled after Ruth) and has been signed "Babe Ruth" just to the left of the illustration. Ruth's blue-ink signature contrasts very strongly against the green cloth background and grades an impressive "8". While the book dates from 1920, the fact that Ruth's signature lacks quotation marks around the name "Babe" indicates that it is was signed by Ruth years later, probably after 1927. This particular book is a collectible in its own right as it marks Ruth's first published work. Obviously ghost written for him, the book (a work of fiction) sought to capitalize on his remarkable 1920 season in which he astounded the sports world by hitting a record fifty-four home runs in a single season, shattering his own record of twenty-nine from the previous year. The 240-page book (5 x 7.5 inches) displays general wear to the exterior including light fraying along the spine and minor soiling. One of the interior pages is detached (though still present within the book), and the spine remains strong and intact. Good condition overall. This is an extremely rare Ruth signed item, the only signed example of this book we have ever seen, and one that would make a fine addition any world-class baseball or signed book collection. The fact that it is signed on the cover, which is very rare for a book, makes this an ideal Ruth-signed display piece. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
