1902-1979 Baseball Player Signed High School/College Yearbook Collection (19)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,637.50

In many areas of collecting, Barry Halper was a man ahead of his time. Long before the high school and college yearbooks of professional athletes and celebrities became an established area of collecting, Barry had already entered the field and assembled a substantial collection. Of course, after acquiring the yearbooks, Barry then concentrated his efforts in having each book signed (whenever possible) by the respective player. Most of them honored his request and usually added a special inscription to him on the interior leaf. Offered is Barry's high school/college yearbook collection, featuring high school/college yearbooks of many well known stars and Hall of Famers. Unless otherwise noted, all of the signatures listed are of recent vintage and were signed at Barry's request. Many books feature multiple signatures of the respective player, as Barry attempted to have players sign wherever they were pictured. (Most players are pictured many times in addition to their standard yearbook photo, as they often played other sports and were members of various school clubs.) These yearbooks were once owned by classmates of the players, and as such, nearly all display interior inscriptions to the former owners. Unless otherwise noted, the books are all in Excellent condition and each of the player signatures and inscriptions grades "10." Christy Mathewson: 1902 Bucknell University yearbook. Mathewson, who was president of his class, has not signed the book but he is pictured five times. The book has been beautifully rebound in leather and bears the gilt stamped letters "The Barry Halper Baseball Archives" on the front. Stan Musial: 1939 Donora High School senior yearbook. Signed four times in blue ink including the inscription "To Barry - One of baseball's greatest fans and collector - your friend - Stan Musial." Interestingly, this book also pictures Joseph Griffey, the father of Ken Griffey, and the grandfather of Ken Griffey Jr. Both Ken Griffey (in black ink) and Ken Griffey Jr. (in blue ink) have also signed the book next to his picture. Jackie Robinson: 1941 U.C.L.A. Southern Campus junior yearbook. Robinson has not signed the book but is pictured seven times. Bobby Thomson: 1942 Curtis High School senior yearbook. Signed twice in blue Sharpie including an inscription to Barry. The book also features a vintage Thomson signature. Joe Garagiola: 1943 South Side Catholic High School senior yearbook. Signed twice in blue ink, including a lengthy inscription that reads "Barry - Only you could come up with a copy of my high school yearbook. When I looked on page 10, I didn't read the copy. I just looked at that 'mop of hair' and almost cried. You now have a picture of me proving at one time I could have dandruff like the big guys. Good luck, always. Your friend Joe Garagiola or as on pg. 10 Joseph 'Garage' Garagiola." Billy Martin: 1946 Berkeley High School senior yearbook. Inscribed in blue ink on the interior leaf: "To Barry - The best of luck to a great fan of baseball + the N. Y. Yankees. Your friend always - Billy Martin - Yankees Always."
