1856 Alexander Cartwright Signed Document
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,527.50
Two-page mortgage contract dated November 9, 1855, bearing the handwritten notations and signature of Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr., one of the founding fathers of baseball. This handwritten document records the fact that on November 9, 1855, J. S. Townsend and his wife, Harriet, borrowed $500 dollars from Alexander Cartwright to purchase a parcel of land in Honolulu, Hawaii, with the mortgage debt to be repaid by the following year. While the text of the agreement is not in Cartwright’s hand, he has signed and acknowledged receipt of the loan payment on the second page of the document. There, in Cartwright's hand, he has written in part “I hereby acknowledge full payment & satisfaction of the foregoing mortgage deed…this 2nd day of December AD 1856. – Alex. J. Cartwright.” Both Cartwright’s handwritten acknowledgment and signature have been penned in black fountain pen and grade “9.” The document is also signed and duly recorded by the official Registrar of Conveyances. This document is one of a small number of documents actually signed by Alexander Cartwright originating long ago directly from Cartwright’s estate. The document (10.25 x 15.25 inches) has both horizontal and vertical fold lines. In Very Good to Excellent condition. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500.
