1877 Alexander Cartwright Signed Document
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $822.50
One-page handwritten document, dated Honolulu, June 4, 1877, scripted entirely in the hand of Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr., one of the founding fathers of baseball. Although not formally signed by Cartwright, his signature appears within the text of the document, which has dimensions approximating that of a check. It reads in full: “$50 – Renum [remuneration] for A. J. Cartwright fifty dollars to be charged to me as general afa [affairs].” It is signed by Cartwright’s client, M. Paiko in legal acknowledgment of the charge. Both the text and Cartwright’s signature have been penned in black fountain pen and grade “10.” Cartwright’s firm, Cartwright and Company Ltd., handled the business affairs for many local merchants, one of whom was M. Paiko, a cattle rancher on the Island. This document originates directly from Cartwright’s estate. The document (8 x 3 inches) has been trimmed to its current dimensions (as done when issued in 1877) and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
