1956 to 1981 New York Yankees Black Bat Collection Including 1961 (9)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

Since the 1920s there has never been a decade in which the New York Yankees have failed to win a pennant. Offered here are nine New York Yankees black bats (representing seven different years) commemorating that long tradition of success. The highlight of the collection is a Nr/Mt example of perhaps the most desirable of all black bats: the 1961 Yankees. The black H&B commemorative bat is stamped "New York Yankees World Champions 1961" and features the gilt-stamped names (either in block letter or facsimile autograph) of thirty-three team members including Mantle, Maris, Berra, Ford, Houk, Kubek, Richardson, and Skowron. The 1961 Yankees, of course, need no introduction and are one of the "magic" teams of baseball history. This is an ideal presentation black bat example from this legendary powerhouse team. The additional eight black bats in the collection are comprised of the following years: 1956 World Champions (Gd-Vg, heavy surface flaking); 1957 AL Champions (Vg, surface flaking); 1957 (technically Vg-Ex due to a number of light scratches, displays as Ex); 1958 World Champions (Ex, with circular line at the end of the barrel); 1976 AL Champions (Nr/Mt); 1977 World Champions (Nr/Mt); and two 1981 AL Champions (both Nr/Mt). The presentation of black bats to players, friends of the club, and dignitaries as a keepsake of Championship seasons is a tradition that began in the mid 1930s, and continues to this day. All of the commemorative bats measure 35 inches in length. Total: 9 bats. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
