1940 Honus Wagner Large-Format George Burke Photo (1940 Play Ball Image)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,292.50
Original large-format George Burke photo of Honus Wagner featuring the image used for Wagner's 1940 Play Ball baseball card (card #168). The 1939 and 1940 Play Ball sets are well known for their then-groundbreaking use of quality photography which was very different than that which had previously been seen on gum cards. The images were provided by the legendary baseball photographer George Burke, a Chicago based photographer who began his sports photography career in 1929. For his era, Burke is held in the same high esteem as that of his most famous predecessors, masters such as Conlon, Bain, and Thompson. The popularity of the 1939 Play Ball set resulted in the company once again commisionsing Burke to photograph ballplayers for it is new, larger set in 1940 (240 cards as opposed to 161 cards), which featured a number of former stars including Honus Wagner. Large-format Burke photos are extremely rare and the offered print's special connection to the famed 1940 Play Ball set makes this an all the more unique and significant example. The photograph (11 x 14 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays minor soiling along the white border areas, as well as paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
