Circa 1914 Stall & Dean Ty Cobb Trophy Cup
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,525.00
Extremely rare trophy cup, issued by Stall & Dean, featuring a full-length image of Ty Cobb in a batting stance on the front. This is the premier baseball trophy of the era. While there are many different styles of trophies dating from 1910 to 1920, this is the only trophy produced during the era that features an actual likeness of a player, in this case Ty Cobb at bat in the same pose as appears on his T3 Turkey Red card (as well as the related S81 and L1 tobacco premium issues), making this rarity a special prize both as a trophy and as a Ty Cobb display piece. "Stall & Dean" and "Championship Cup" are lettered, respectively, above and below Cobb's image. The reverse is engraved "Champions Pacific Telephone League - Won by Installations." Manufactured by Reed & Barton, as noted along the underside. The trophy is accompanied by a photocopy of a page from a 1914 Stall & Dean catalog that advertises this cup. According to the catalog, this special cup was available exclusively from the company, free of charge, to any league that adopted its official ball or uniforms: "Following our custom as in the past, of donating a handsome sterling silver trophy cup to the winning club of a league adopting our official Baseball or Uniforms, we have had one of the leading silversmiths of this country, Reed & Barton, design for us a cup of unique design, with a French Bronze finish and Gold lined." Obviously, the Pacific Telephone League took advantage of the company's offer, but it is not known how many other leagues did so, or for how long this special custom-designed promotional trophy cup was offered by the company. This cup is exceedingly rare: the offered example is one of only several that we seen over the past thirty-five years. The only other Stall & Dean Ty Cobb trophy cup we have ever actually handled resided in the famed Barry Halper Collection and was sold with the majority of his memorabilia in 1999. The trophy cup (8 inches in height) displays light wear, including a few light scratches. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
