Unique 1917 Babe Ruth Original Photo As a Member of the Boston Red Sox
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,527.50
This unique, original, previously unpublished snapshot photograph captures Boston Red Sox pitchers Babe Ruth and Herb Pennock posing together during spring training. The date "1917" is written in vintage black fountain pen along the lower right corner. Original candid photos of Ruth with the Red Sox are rare, and this one is especially notable for Ruth's neat and trim appearance. Ruth was only twenty-two years old at the time this photo was taken. Ruth looks quite natty in his Red Sox team sweater and his mid section offers no hint of its future expansion. The 1917 date on the reverse appears to be accurate since, based upon their playing records, this photo could only date from either 1916, 1917 or 1919 (Pennock missed the 1918 season due to military service). Its visual appeal notwithstanding, the photo also has an additional significance given the fact that in 1919, Pennock, a fellow southpaw, replaced Ruth in the rotation while Ruth made his famous transition from pitcher to outfielder. The two were later reunited in New York in 1923, following Pennock's trade to the Yankees. The photo (4 x 3 inches) has two small remnants of clear tape on the reverse (top and bottom border, respectively) from having once been mounted in an album. A light pencil notation also appears on the reverse. Exceptional contrast and clarity. In Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
