Trio of Circa 1915 Grover Alexander Culver News Photos

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $940.00

Each of these three original Culver photographs capture Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Alexander and date to his early years with the Philadelphia Phillies (1911-1917). Individually the photographs are stunning. Together, they make for a simply outstanding display and an extraordinary presentation of the art of early baseball photography. One of the photos pictures Alexander posing (ball in hand) in front of the dugout (3 x 5 inches). The second captures him warming up on the sidelines (4 x 4.5 inches). The final photo is a rare image of Alexander at bat during a game (4 x 5 inches). Two of the photos bear Alexander's name printed along the top (the name was actually etched into the negative), with one of the two also listing his team affiliation, "Phil." Grover Alexander, nicknamed "Pete," was one of the greatest pitchers of his day and his 373 wins ranks third on the all-time list. Alexander captured the Triple Crown of pitching (leading the league in wins, strikeouts, and ERA) on three separate occasions and he finished his career with an amazing 90 shutouts (including a Major League record of sixteen in 1916). Despite his numerous pitching accomplishments, Alexander is best remembered today for his heroic performance in Game 7 of the 1926 World Series. After having started and won Game 6, Alexander was called upon the next day to preserve the Cardinals slim 3-2 lead. Entering the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two out, Alexander struck out Tony Lazzeri on four pitches to end the threat. He then blanked the Yankees over the next two innings to give the Cardinals their first World Championship in franchise history. Each photo is mounted upon a larger cardboard backing that has been stamped "Culver Pictures" on the reverse. All three photos are in Excellent to Mint condition and have been beautifully matted and framed together to a total dimension of 16.75 x 9.25 inches. Total: 3 photos mounted and framed together. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $940.00
