Circa 1897 Buck Ewing Presentation Display

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,292.50

Magnificent full-color framed presentation display dates from circa 1897 and measures 12 x 16 inches. This piece originates from a very small group of items from Buck Ewing's estate, which surfaced many years ago. The framed presentation features an oval original color portrait painting of Buck Ewing in a Cincinnati uniform. The painting (perfect likeness, extremely detailed, appears to be watercolor) is surrounded by a silver wreath design incorporating ribbons and a card above the portrait which reads in beautiful calligraphic writing: "Ewing Compliments of Cincinnati for Cincinnati." This appears to be a presentation piece given to Buck Ewing on a very special occasion, most likely to celebrate his retirement from baseball in 1897. This is a beautiful and particularly striking display piece, presented in its original decoratively carved silver painted wood frame. Very faded pencil notations on the reverse appear to read "The Cincinnati Base Ball Club, Wm. Buck Ewing, Cincinnati Enquirer." This frame was obviously made exactly as is for presentation, and the cardboard back, which is sealed with nails, has never been unsealed and opened. Unique. Ideal for display. Outstanding quality. A couple small punctures from reverse from storage, otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
