1883 Philadelphia Athletics Imperial Cabinet Photo
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,762.50
This historic Imperial cabinet photo captures the 1883 American Association Champion Philadelphia Athletics in a classic team pose. Among the thirteen team members pictured here are star pitcher Bobby Mathews, Harry Stovey, Cub Stricker, and George Bradley, who is best known today for throwing the first no-hitter in National League history. 1883 represents the only year in which the Athletics captured the American Association pennant during the league’s ten-year existence (1882-1891). The photograph (9.5 x 6.75 inches) has a single very small abrasion and a few extremely minor surface wrinkles that are only visible when viewed at certain angles. Close examination reveals a number of professionally executed hand embellishments to the background image, strongly suggesting that at one time this photograph was used for publication. In Excellent condition overall. The photo is affixed to its original cardboard mount (12 x 9.5 inches) that has undergone professional restoration in repair of a small corner chip (undetectable with the naked eye). This is an extremely rare original display photograph featuring the first Athletics team to win the pennant in the history of the franchise. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
