Extraordinary Nineteenth-Century Boston (National League) Scorecard Collection 1877-1891 (28 Programs)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,812.50
Presented is an outstanding collection of twenty-eight nineteenth-century baseball scorecards. Spanning the years 1877-1891, this extraordinary collection of National League scorecards features numerous Hall of Famers listed within the preprinted lineups. All of the scorecards are from Boston home games and have been scored in either pencil or ink. Condition ranges from Vg to Ex unless otherwise noted. Many display small areas of light age toning or soiling, with nearly all displaying a few extraneous period pencil notations either along the interior or on one or both covers (i.e., the date, names of teams, etc.). Each scorecard is of the fold-over variety, with a few exhibiting some very minor tears along the edges of the fold line. Sizes range from approximately 3.5 x 5.5 to 6 x 7 inches (folded). The scorecards are listed by year, with Boston's opponent and any prominent players duly noted. 1877: vs. Cincinnati (G. Wright, O'Rourke, Lipman Pike). 1878: vs. Providence (G. Wright, O'Rourke); vs. Providence (G. Wright, O'Rourke, Ward). 1879: vs. Cincinnati (O'Rourke); vs. Providence (G. Wright, O'Rourke, Ward, corner chip in upper left); vs. Buffalo (Galvin); vs. Buffalo (Galvin); vs. Cleveland. 1880: vs. Providence (O'Rourke, Ward, corner chip in lower left); vs. Worcester (O'Rourke), vs. Chicago (O'Rourke, Anson, Kelly, heavy scribbling on front and rear covers); vs. Troy (O'Rourke, Connor, Ferguson, Welch); vs. Providence (O'Rourke, Ward); vs. Chicago (O'Rourke, Anson, Kelly); vs. Providence (O'Rourke, Ward). 1881: vs. Detroit (Mathews, Hanlon); vs. Chicago (Wright, Kelly, Anson); an unusual dual-sided scorecard for an exhibition double header between Boston and two separate amateur clubs. Their opponent for the first game is the Beacons and the lineup includes Clarkson as their pitcher. This may very well be John Clarkson, as he made his Major League debut the following year. Their second opponent is a "Picked Nine" club. George Wright is in the lineup for both games for Boston. 1883: vs. Detroit (Hanlon); vs. Philadelphia (Ferguson). 1884: vs. Providence (Radbourn); vs. New York (Ewing, Ward, Connor, Welch). 1885: vs. Chicago (Kelly, Anson, Clarkson); vs. Chicago (Kelly, Anson, Clarkson, corner chips in upper left and right). 1886: vs. Chicago (Kelly, Anson, Clarkson); vs. Washington; vs. New York (O'Rourke, Connor, Ewing, Ward). 1891: vs. Philadelphia (Nichols, Hamilton, Delehanty, Good condition with a number of tears). Also included in this collection are an 1886 schedule of National League games and a scorecard dating from 1879 that bears the handwritten lineups of two unidentified clubs. Total: 30 scorecards. Reserve: $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $8,812.50
