Three 1871-1875 Baseball Guide Rarities

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

The game of baseball was a true "work in progress" during the nineteenth century. For many players the only way to keep track of the yearly rule changes was to consult the annual reference guides, which, as the seasons went on, were issued by a number of respected publishers. Offered here are three particularly rare early guides, each of which has been edited by Henry Chadwick, the "Father of Baseball." 1) 1872 The Base Ball Player's Book of Reference , published by Peck & Snyder, New York (4.75 x 7 inches). Soft cover, twenty-eight pages. The design of the cover of this extremely rare book is very unusual in that the publisher used the cover for the 1871 guide as the cover for the 1872 volume as well. The cover actually bears the date "1871;" however, upon close examination it can be seen that the second numeral "1" has been lightly stamped over with the numeral "2." The front cover is lightly soiled and displays both a chip and the name of a former owner in the upper right corner. A vertical center fold and a crease in the upper right corner extend throughout the book. In Good to Very Good condition. 2) Chadwick's Base Ball Manual For 1871 , published by American News Company, New York (4.25 x 6.5 inches). Soft cover, 144 pages. As noted on the cover, this book is full of information and includes "The revised rules of the game for the season of 1871; also the new constitution and by-laws of the National Association of Amateur Base Ball Players; together with a history of the rise and progress of the old National Association, and a full detailed report of the proceedings of the two conventions of 1871..." The covers display a few minor tears and there is some light foxing along a few of the pages. In Very Good condition. 3) Beadle's Dime Base Ball Player for 1875 , published by Beadle and Adams, New York (4.25 x 6.5 inches). Soft cover, ninety pages. Many of the pages have separated along the spine, but the book remains intact. In Good condition overall. Total: 3 guides. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
