1859 Olympic BBC Constitution and By-Laws

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

1859 Constitution and By-Laws of the Olympic Base Ball Club of South Brooklyn (24 pages plus covers, published by Wm. D. Roe & Co., Stationers and Printers, No.59 Wall Street), issued to team members. The Olympics of South Brooklyn were one of the most prominent clubs of the 1850s and 1860s, and are of all the greater significance as one of the earliest teams based in Brooklyn. They were also charter members of The National Association of Base Ball Players, the very first formal baseball organization. All baseball constitutions and bylaws dating from the 1850s are extremely rare. An example such as this, from such an important team, is an extraordinary find. This is one of only two examples of this extraordinary rarity that we have ever seen. Includes bylaws, rules of the game as at that time just adopted by the National Association of Base Ball Players, and two pages devoted to a list of NABBP member teams, accompanied by a schedule listing each team’s date of organization, places of play (for example, “Elysian Fields, Hoboken” for the Knickerbockers), and “Dates of Play” (the days of the week each club has scheduled to play). The constitution has only minor imperfections to the cover, and otherwise has very little wear, especially considering age and fragile construction. There is a little tape along the spine, and a piece of paper affixed to the inside cover neatly lists the names and positions of team members, and has probably been there since 1859. Overall in Good to Very Good condition. An extremely significant rarity dating from the earliest days of baseball in Brooklyn. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
