1908 Baseball "Old-Timers Day" Framed Photo Display
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,525.00
This unique vintage framed display gives tribute to one of the most extraordinary groups of baseball stars ever assembled: The Old Timers Reunion held on August 12, 1908 at Peddock Island, Massachusetts. Displayed in the center section of the vintage three-tier wooden frame is a remarkable display photograph that captures the festivities of the reunion. The former players, all with a strong connection to Boston, are pictured seated together in front of the grandstand, posed beneath a banner reading "Welcome To The Old Timers" above, with fans flanking them on either side. Although the wide-angle scope of the image makes visual identification of some player's difficult, the bottom tier of the frame features a handwritten identification of the "Old Timers" present that day. Among the thirty-three players named are Hall of Famers James O'Rourke, Tommy McCarthy, Hugh Duffy, Dan Brouthers, Mickey Welch, George Wright, and Jesse Burkett. Other notables include Candy Cummings (inventor of the curve ball), Timothy Murnane, John Morrill, Dickey Pearce (he passed away just two months after this photo was taken), Billy Nash, Sam Crane, Fred Thayer (inventor of the catcher's mask while at Harvard), and James Tyng (teammate of Thayer's at Harvard and first player to wear a catcher's mask). The top tier of the display features two scorecard pages (which partially overlap) from that day, each filled out by hand in pencil. One team is listed as "Amateurs" and the other "Old Timers," and it is noted the the latter were victorious by a score of 7-5. Interestingly, despite the fact that his name does not appear on the aforementioned handwritten sheet, "Spalding" (presumably Al Spalding) is listed on the scorecard as the pitcher for the "Old Timers" and, therefore, may be included in the photo as well. The photo (9.5 x 6.5) is affixed to a cardboard mount that bears the hand-lettered notation "The Old Timers Reunion at Peddock Is. Mass. - Aug. 12th 1908." The photo displays outstanding clarity and is in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an extraordinary display piece from a long forgotten and very significant reunion of many of baseball's greatest pioneers. The frame, which is intended to be hung on the wall by a loop at the top, in total measures 11.25 x 17.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
