1969 New York Yankees Team-Signed Ball - With Rookie Munson Signature

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $705.00

This 1969 New York Yankees team-signed ball is especially significant due to the inclusion of Thurman Munson’s signature among the twenty-seven team members who have signed the ball. Very few 1969 Yankees team balls include include Munson's signature because he was called up by the Yankees late in the season and made his Major League debut on August 8th. Moreover, his playing time was limited over the next two months and he only appeared in twenty-six games. The Spalding “Official Pro League” ball has been signed in either blue or black ink by the following twenty-seven team members: Munson (grading “6”), Stottlemyre (clubhouse, sweet spot), Houk (sweet spot), Pepitone (clubhouse), Kenney, McDaniel, Woods, Downing, Tresh, Aker, Tepedino, Shopay, Clarke, Boehmer, Ellis, Murcer (clubhouse, ball label), McDonald, Burbach, Michael, White, Bloomberg, Cox, Hamilton, Peterson, Robinson, Klimkowski, and Gibbs. Signatures range in grade from “5” to “10,” averaging “6/7.” Munson batted .256 with 1 home run and 9 RBI in 86 at bats in 1969. The following year he blossomed into one of the league's top catchers, posting a .302 average with 6 home runs and 53 RBI. Those numbers later earned him the Rookie of the Year Award at season’s end. All Thurman Munson signatures are rare due to his untimely death in 1979. The signature on this particular ball is all the more significant as it represents one of Munson's earliest signatures as a major leaguer. Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $705.00
