1961 Mantle, Maris, and Berra Signed 8 x 10-Inch Photos
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,410.00
Collection of three 8 x 10-inch black-and-white photos signed, respectively, by Roger Maris, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle (secretarial), matted together in a framed display. All of the photos have been signed in blue ink (grading "9/10"), with Maris having added the salutation "Best Wishes." These photos originate directly from the New York Yankees and the story accompanying them serves to illustrate how times have changed with regard to the way in which team officials interact with fans. Our consignor's father was a taxi driver in Newark, New Jersey, who often served passengers going to and coming from Newark Airport. In February 1961, who should get into his cab but George Weiss (former general manager of the New York Yankees), Roy Hamey (general manager of the New York Yankees), and Bob Fishel (Public Relations Director of the New York Yankees). In the course of conversation with his distinguished guests, the driver made mention that both he and his fifteen-year-old son were huge Yankee fans. Upon exiting the cab, Fishel casually asked for his son's name and address and said he would send him something. The following week a large manilla envelope from the Yankees arrived at our consignor's home containing the three signed photos offered here. The Mantle signature is a classic secretarial signature from the period, which is not surprising, as the Yankees probably received thousands of requests for signed Mantle photos on a weekly basis. The Maris and Berra, signatures, however, are genuine examples and each contrasts beautifully against its respective light background. Included with the photos is their original mailing envelope, addressed to our consignor, which is postmarked January 25, 1961. The Yankees (and Maris and Mantle) went on to have a pretty good year in 1961. The official Yankees mailing label bears Fishel's name typed above the Yankees team name. The photos remain in Near Mint condition and have been matted and framed together (with archival materials) to a total dimension of 13.5 x 37 inches (The photographs can easily be removed for shipping if desired.) LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
