Jackie Robinson Signed Photo to George "Shotgun" Shuba

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,880.00

The bond of friendship between George "Shotgun" Shuba and Jackie Robinson was forged during Robinson's first year of professional baseball in 1946, when both players were members of the Montreal Royals. Their connection in history is actually far deeper than friendship. Shuba, who followed Robinson in the batting order, will always be remembered for his symbolic role in breaking down Major League baseball's tenacious "color barrier." He was the first teammate to shake Robinson's hand after his first professional home run. It has been said ever since that this legendary handshake between Jackie Robinson and George 'Shotgun' Shuba on April 18, 1946, as Robinson crossed the plate, was "the handshake that broke the barriers in baseball and changed sports in our century forever." Years later, when Shuba's baseball career was coming to an end, Robinson wished him well by presenting him with this personally inscribed photograph. The black-and-white photograph (7 x 9 inches) captures Robinson in uniform and has been inscribed in blue fountain pen: "To George with best wishes for a very successful venture. I know everything will go well. Jackie Robinson." The inscription grades "9/10," while Robinson's signature grades "7/8." The signed photo is accompanied by an LOA directly from George Shuba attesting to its provenance. According to Shuba's letter, this photo dates to circa 1955, which was his final season with the Dodgers. The photo itself was taken in 1951, as evidenced by the National League 75th anniversary patch on Robinson's left sleeve. Shuba joined the Dodgers in 1948, one year after Robinson, and remained with the club through the 1955 season. Robinson retired one year later. As a Jackie Robinson signed photo, this is a superb example. As a photograph signed by Robinson and presented as a personal gift to George Shuba, it has special meaning and historical significance. The photo displays a few very minor surface wrinkles (discernible only at certain angles) and is in Excellent overall condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 12.25 x 14.25 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
